Monolithic and Fire-Insulating Glass: Start with the Performance Requirement

Date:

2026/09/26

A glass thickness or a fire-rating label is only the starting point for selection. First identify the required performance, the application and the complete assembly in which the glass will be used.

Define E, EW or EI

E - integrity: resistance to the passage of flames and hot gases for the classified duration. An E requirement does not establish insulation performance.

EW - integrity and radiation: integrity together with a limit on radiant heat transmission under the applicable classification.

EI - integrity and insulation: integrity together with insulation performance, limiting temperature rise on the unexposed side.

Understand the glass family

Monolithic products and glass incorporating a fire-resistant insulating interlayer address different requirements. In fire-insulating constructions, the functional interlayer is designed to form an insulating barrier under fire exposure. The resulting performance must be supported by the test evidence for the assembly.

The KINGUARD website lists borosilicate E60 vision-panel models separately from its EW and EI laminated configurations. The MINGAN catalogue also describes chemically or physically treated monolithic products. These are distinct product references, and should not be treated as interchangeable because they share the word “monolithic”.

Likewise, a FLAMGUARD vision-panel configuration must be identified by its own model and application. A thickness shown for another system in a group catalogue is not an automatic substitute.

Check the whole system

Review glass dimensions, frame or door construction, glazing depth, beads, seals, fixings and the applicable standard. For exterior use, also state the environmental exposure. Confirm the proposed configuration and permitted scope against the relevant technical evidence before specification.

Use the selection documents together

Download the KINGUARD Glass Product Guide (PDF) for the selection workflow. The Product Range Overview provides current website reference models, and the Glass Test and Technical Document Index helps identify records to request.

See the EI/EW series and vision panels, or send your application and drawings for review.

Discuss how this relates to your project

Share your application, project location, required fire rating and system details so the technical discussion can focus on your requirements.
